Cartas Edificantes dos jesuítas no início do século XX no sertão do nordeste brasileiro: percepções de educação

Abstract

To lecture about the presence of the Portuguese Jesuits in the early twentieth century in northeastern Brazil and aimed to investigate the missionary activities of these religious education of their perceptions. To this intent was made use of bibliographic and documentary research especially the Edifying Letters dated 1912 and 1913.The study was referenced authors as Azevedo, Cavalcante, Certeau, Galter, Klein, Londoño, Neves, Meneses, Sousa, among others. We conclude that the Jesuit missions of the Portuguese Province in northeastern backlands had an educational role through religion since through their rites and beliefs transmitted values and behaviors. It could also check the socialization afforded by religion, evidenced by the behavior of country people who flocked to the missions.
